Nantucket is blessed with historic and valuable buildings. As we care for these aging buildings, we are often faced with the need to renovate and replace the parts of those buildings that have worn beyond repair, or have been rendered obsolete. Cottage & Castle undertakes this process with adherence to the same green principles we incorporate in our new construction projects without sacrificing the traditional details of a particular building’s architectural legacy.

The Captains’ homes that line our town streets are a testament to the level of craftsmanship of the carpenters who built them. Unfortunately, the performance standards of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are no longer acceptable. Minor Renovations/Additions and Mechanical System Upgrades
No job is too small to be green. Over the years Cottage & Castle has completed many small renovations, additions and mechanical system retrofits. While few of these smaller projects can qualify for LEED or Energy Star programs, all of them can be completed in adherence to green principles. There are many simple and economical ways to green your home: increase the quality and quantity of insulation, install efficient lighting, use green products like low VOC paint (volatile organic compounds) to improve indoor air quality, reduce energy use, and upgrade existing mechanical equipment. Towards this end Cottage & Castle has adopted REGREEN Residential Remodeling Guidelines, a joint effort of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), as a guide for all our smaller projects.
